Visual effects (sometimes abbreviated as VFX) are the process by which images are created or manipulated in the context of a live-action shot in film and video production. VFX is the integration of live-action footage and other live-action footage or CGI elements to create realistic images.

VFX involves the integration of live-action footage (which may include in-camera special effects) and generated images (digital or optical, animal or creature) that look real but are dangerous, expensive, impractical, and time-consuming. not possible—capture movie. Visual effects using computer-generated imagery (CGI) have recently become accessible to independent filmmakers with the advent of inexpensive and relatively easy-to-use animation and compositing software.

In 1895, Alfred Clark created what is widely considered to be the first motion picture special effect. During the filming of a re-enactment of the beheading of Mary, Queen of Scots, Clark instructs an actor to reinforce the block in Mary's costume. As the executioner brought the ax to her head, Clark turned off the camera, froze all the actors, and kicked the man who played Mary off the set. He put a Mary doll in the actor's place, resumed filming, and allowed the executioner to lower the ax and severe the doll's head. Such techniques would dominate special effects production for a century.

This was the first use of tricks on film and the first type of photographic trick only possible on film, dubbed the "stop trick." Early film pioneer Georges Melius accidentally discovered the same "stop trick."

According to Melius, his camera got stuck while filming a street scene in Paris. Screening the film, he found that the "stop trick" had caused a truck to merge into a car, pedestrians to switch directions, and men to switch directions. Melius, director of the Theater Robert-Houdin, was inspired to develop a series of more than 500 short films between 1896 and 1913, developing or inventing techniques such as multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, resolution and hands in the process. it was painted in color

Due to his ability to manipulate and alter reality with the cinematographer, the prolific Melius is sometimes referred to as the "Kinomagus." His best-known film, Le Voyage Dans la Lune (1902), a whimsical parody of Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon, combines live-action and animation and includes extensive miniature matte painting work.

VFX is used heavily in almost every film produced today. The highest-grossing movie of all time, Avengers: Endgame (2019), used visual effects extensively, and about ninety percent of the film used VFX and CGI. Aside from movies, TV series and web series are also known to use VFX.

Now Visual effects are usually integral to a film's story with appeal. Although most visual effects are completed during post-production, they usually require careful planning and choreography in pre-production and production. While the special effects like explosions and car chases are done on set, the visual effects are mostly done in post-production using many tools and techniques like graphic design, modeling, animation and similar software. A visual effects supervisor is typically involved in production from the beginning to work closely with the film's producer and director to design, direct, and direct the teams needed to achieve the desired effects.

Many studios specialize in visual effects; These include Digital Domain, DreamWorks Animation, Framestore, Weta Digital, Industrial Light & Magic, Pixomondo, Moving Picture Company and Sony Pictures ImageWorks.
